A message from Mrs. Goodwin

Hello, Concert Band!

I'm excited to get started with you this semester. We will jump right in on Tuesday with our first rehearsal. If you are new this semester and would like to audition for seating, we will stop early on Tuesday to accommodate that.

Auditions are NOT required, but encouraged so we can be sure to place you on the appropriate part in your section.

Please be aware that second semester auditions are much less formal than in the fall. It will just be me in my office rather than a panel of all the conductors and the teacher of your instrument. Since I'm comparing you to people I heard about 5 months ago, I tend to place people more conservatively to be fair to those who have played for a semester. In some cases, I didn't hear the fall auditions (especially clarinets) due to my teaching schedule. Just giving you a heads-up. Please don't get too worked up about it. Like, I said, it's more to make sure you're on the appropriate part rather than to rank you.

If you would like to audition, please prepare something you like to play. Excerpts from a solo or etude are perfect but it's really up to you. Make sure it shows off your abilities. I may ask you to play a scale to demonstrate your range on the instrument if it isn't apparent enough from the prepared piece. It's not to drill your scale knowledge.

New members are VERY welcome. If you have a friend who used to be in band, convince them to come with you on Tuesday. It's a great way to meet people from all over campus, to reduce stress, and to make great music again. Most of the members of the Concert Band major in something other than music. If you are new to the group and/or are bringing a friend, please shoot me an email to let me know what instrument so I can approximate the setup and sheet music needs on Tuesday.

Please make sure you bring any mutes or other accessories you could potentially need for your instrument from home (oh, and your instrument!). Percussionists, bring any sticks and mallets you have.

See you soon!
